MTWThFRIDAY :: H54F

Four highlights of this week:

1.  Celebrated a friend's birthday at a cool bar on Tuesday night.  They had a delicious beer selection, and an amazing giant pretzel with a french onion/cheese dip that was to die for.  It is called The Hay Merchant should you ever be in H-town!

2.  Saw Les Miserables this week.   It was *really* good.  I had never seen it performed before or anything, and I think I maybe read bits and pieces of it for a college course ages ago, so I liked taking it all in.

3.  Birchbox came this week.  Highlights included:  a very good face cream (Clark's Botanicals Marine Cream) that I am enjoying a lot.   A nice perfume that smells awesome (Harvey Prince Skinny Chic), and some more shampoo. I am starting to think that Birchbox thinks I have the dirtiest hair ever.  I would prefer a little less shampoo, guys/gals.

4.  This Lance Armstrong interview with Oprah is so great.  I don't even think he's truly sorry, and I like seeing her get after him.  "How do you feel about using the whore word?" "Ahhh, not, not good." Ok, Lance.

And one bummer:

The Packers lost, and then so did the Texans.  So now I guess I'm cheering for Tom Brady as a person in the playoffs.

Gettin' down on Friday!

1.  Had a great weekend with my parents in town.  Mom and I did some intense bird watching at at wildlife refuge..and by that I mean we drove the 7 mile auto tour loop and actually just saw a couple bobcats and a bird with pink wings!  It was great bonding time though.

2.  I made a perfect chocolate cake from scratch.  No photos because it was devoured by all for my Dad's birthday.  Also, the recipe is on the back of the Hershey's cocoa powder can if you are interested-I made it in two nine-inch round pans.

3.  Buckwild premiered on MTV.  I don't think I need to say a whole lot more besides I learned what "a holler" is, I learned how to make a dump truck into a pool (no step by step tutorial, but it seemed basic), and I learned that boys will just keep eating their BBQ chips if you try to accuse them of having relations in your bed with another girl.  Standard MTV.

4. Livestrong's MyPlate site and app.  Kind of into this so far--they have a TON of foods pre-loaded, like my Jimmy John's special order (I hate mayo and won't accept tracking cals for something I don't eat).  I like tracking what I eat because it keeps me honest, so we'll see how this goes.

5.  A bunch of great things got planned a little this week--the Houston Rodeo schedule came out, big yay for Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, and Pitbull, whhhat?! I decided I will probably fly back to Chicago in May for a two day trip, and best of all, five of my closest friends from WI booked flights to come and visit in April!

3 Hours Later....

I feel like all of the movies we have seen lately have been a minimum of three hours long.  And I'm not saying I haven't enjoyed Skyfall, Django Unchained, and whatever that other really long-feeling one was...and going back to summer, The Dark Knight Rises, in which I was mostly a panicky-hot mess.

I guess I am used to movies that can entertain me in under 3 hours, you know, like bad Katherine Heigl movies or even smart movies that just don't keep going.  I try my best not to eat two large buckets of popcorn with Bryan at movies, but I'm not kidding when I say that I truly *gave up* 3/4 of the way through Skyfall and left for popcorn the minute they actually got to Skyfall.

I really want to see Zero Dark Thirty, but I cannot hack it for another 3 hours in a theater with minimal, watered-down Diet Coke left and a bunch of popcorn kernels.

Friday, Friday!

Here are my top five of the week:

1.  Had an awesome NYE at the Hyatt here.  It was a blast, and much fun was had.

Oh hey, 50,000 balloons!  IN.SANE.

2.  My parents will be arriving for a visit tomorrow--very excited about this, as we haven't seen them since our wedding in September!

3.  Found a couple great jobs to apply for this week!

4.  I think I've finally figured out the shadow combinations to use from my Urban Decay Naked palette, and yes I'm totally obsessed.  Only took a few months of messing around with it!

5.  STILL enjoying leftover (now frozen) lasagna from Christmas Eve.  Perk of it being just the two of us was that we had mountains of food to freeze and eat off of for weeks!

I would also like to add in one junk bucket thing that happened:

The Badgers lost the Rose Bowl.  For the third year in a row.  With Barry coaching.  COME ON.  Ok, end rant.  Looking for a Packers victory on Saturday to cheer me up!

Resolutions

Every new year, everyone makes a resolution.  We might not all share them with others, but at some point towards the end of one year, and the beginning of a new year, we think in our heads, "I will do ________ differently in the next year."  My two cents?  I say we all just focus on being happy instead.

Think about it like this--what would make you a happier person, a better person?  My answer to that question varies a bit, but probably involves going to church more frequently, losing a little weight, and having a more stable job.  I guess the good news for me is that those are lifestyle changes I can make, but that's easier said than done.  It seems like setting out with lofty goals never works--I'm not going to sit here and say I'll start hitting the gym 7 days a week, because that's a lie.  But I can say I'll make an effort to work out more with my husband, and make it to church at least once a month. Annd let's just say I make every effort to find a more stable job, and hope for the best on that one.

I can also say that I'd like to focus on the positive more.  I think it's easy to be bogged down by the crap we deal with every day.  Like, really easy.  But, it's important to focus on what's good too.  So to start, here are five brilliant things about my life right now:

1.  A great, supportive husband.  We had a lot of change in 2012 (live across the country from each other!, finish grad school!, start a new job!, get married!, adjust to a new place!) but it's all worth it.  I find more and more that he is my best friend, and no matter what, we have each other here.

2.  Two jobs.  Although my job now isn't permanent, we are lucky to have two people working when there are many unemployed and unable to find something semi-stable.

3.  Faith.  This is something I wish I thought more about, but I'm glad to be where I am here.

4.  Friends and family everywhere.  From Texas to Wisconsin to Illinois, to everywhere it seems, we have a lot of friends.  And I think that makes me really lucky.  I spent NYE texting/chatting with those who were out of town and toasting with those in town, and it was awesome.

5.  Healthy escapes from reality.  Oh you mean my Real Housewives of whatever obsessions?  Constantly spending time on Trulia looking at houses?  Pinning obsessively at times?  Teen Mom 2?  Yes, and I make no apologies.  It feels great to unwind and zone out at night.
